"Group B Strep is an easily preventable infection, but is responsible for between 12,000 and 15,000 infections in newborns each year...Thousands of these infected babies die and thousands more live their lives with serious long-term mental and physical handicaps...A simple screening test for this bacteria should be done on all pregnant women between the 35th and 37th weeks of pregnancy. A rapid test has been developed that can detect the presence of GBS during labor. Strep B can be treated with mild antibiotics during pregnancy and intravenous antibiotics during labor, both of which will protect the baby."
