Jack-o-lanterns could float in an armada / sail
By Hicbd
"On All Hallows' Day, the day after Halloween, Echo Lake in Mountainside reflected a warm orange glow as hundreds of jack-o'-lanterns were set afloat at The Great Pumpkin Sail. Families brought their creatively carved pumpkins with lids to the event and the county provided candles and floats. Hot chocolate, marshmallow and entertainment was also provided."

Please login to commentJapanese food / onigiri / rice balls could be sold at 7-Elevens worldwide
By Hicbd
"In case you didn’t know, convenience store food in Japan is kind of a big deal, which is why plenty of American ears perked up at the news that 7-Eleven — the Japanese version — might be expanding its presence in the States. It’s also likely why people of X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, got so excited about a thread announcing that a number of San Francisco 7-Eleven stores have started selling onigiri, the triangle-shaped rice balls sold at the convenience store’s outlets in Asia."

Please login to commentFood banks / pantries could be like grocery stores
By Hicbd
"Traditional food banks and free grocery centers often give pre-bagged packages or operate in a farmers’ market-style setting, restricting consumers’ options and variety. In stark contrast, the District 10 Community Market offers a dignified shopping experience for locals, who can choose from aisles stocked with staples such as milk, eggs, fresh veggies, tortilla chips, and canned beans. The only distinction from a traditional supermarket is the lack of a cash register."

Please login to commentAssassinations / targeted killing could be used instead of war
By Hicbd
"Historically, at least since the mid-eighteenth century, Western thinking has generally considered the use of assassination as a tool of statecraft to be illegal. Some academics, military personnel and officials describe targeted killing as legitimate within the context of self-defense, when employed against terrorists or combatants engaged in asymmetrical warfare. They argue that unmanned combat aerial vehicles (drones) are more humane and more accurate than manned vehicles. Scholars are also divided as to whether targeted killings are an effective counterterrorism strategy."

Please login to commentMuseums could have scavenger hunts for kids
By Hicbd
"Museum outings with kids can be a toss-up, so I’ve got a little trick I use to keep everyone engaged. Before we go, I put together a scavenger hunt packed with random things to spot. Think “a skull,” “grapes,”...You can tailor the list to kids' ages, too—when mine were little, it was more about colors and expressions ("something red, someone who looks happy"), but now it’s specific pieces or trickier things to find. For added fun, I throw in some bonus challenges: show me the scariest-looking baby or find the painting with the most people in it."

Please login to commentChildhood photos could inspire / comfort
By Hicbd
"Hanging in each of their offices is their childhood photo. The reason behind this adorable decision? Every time they look up to see their younger selves in all their girlhood glory — complete with rosy cheeks, cheese-y grins and sparkling eyes — they remember a piece of themselves that deserves the very best. Grace during times of failure. Patience in moments of frustration. The kindest encouragement. And then — here’s my favorite part — they try to treat their current selves with all that tender love."
