Public housing could be affordable, diverse, and well-maintained

"In 1964 a law was passed allowing folks in (Singapore) public housing to “buy” their homes. What they actually own, however, is a 99-year lease on the property. The government is still the actual owner, which means that while residents can buy, sell and even inherit property, the price is controlled. This hybrid system also means that the government maintains, renovates and upgrades the apartments free of charge."
