People could have additional time with deceased loved ones in hospitals / hospices

By Hicbd

"This spring, the couple lost a daughter to trisomy 13 early into Caitlin’s pregnancy. As they grieved, they longed to find a way to help other parents going through the same sorrow and learned about the CuddleCot, a special pad that can be inserted into a crib or bassinet. It discreetly cools a stillborn baby in a hospital room to give parents more time with their child."

Hospitals could have rooms to grieve / process trauma

By Hicbd

"They didn't want other families to experience grief in a cold, public hospital waiting room as they did. They wanted to create private, comfortable spaces for families or hospital staff processing trauma or loss...So they created Jane's Room, an organization dedicated to providing the literal and emotional space to grieve. In the last 11 years, the organization has created rooms at 14 different hospitals, and two more are currently being developed."

Parents of premie / preterm / NICU babies could receive extended parental leave

By Hicbd

"Roughly 10 percent of babies in the U.S. are born prematurely, and the majority of them spend some time in the NICU. Almost half of Americans, however, do not have any form of maternity or paternity leave. And the vast majority of those who do simply qualify for FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act), which guarantees job security for only 12 weeks and does not pay while you are out with your baby..FMLA doesn’t even get us out of the hospital, much less give us any time at home to adjust to a baby who will likely have additional medical needs."

New mothers (particularly with birth injuries / tearing) could have the option of staying longer in the hospital post-childbirth

By Hicbd

"In Western countries, there is a trend to shorten the postpartum length of stay in hospital driven by cost containment, hospital bed availability and a movement toward ‘demedicalisation’ of childbirth...However, concerns about early discharge arose regarding potential adverse outcomes such as delays in detecting and preventing maternal morbidities and neonatal pathologies, earlier weaning, lack of professional support, higher prevalence of postpartum depression and increased hospital readmissions for both mothers and infants."

Electric power lines could be protected from dangerous theft

By Hicbd

"Around the world, people can illegally tamper with electrical wires in order to steal electricity. For example — in Pakistan, people use kunda “wire hook” connections, which are wires that illegally hook directly onto the distribution cables that bring energy to homes and businesses. Not only is electricity theft from kunda connections a health hazard, but it also impacts the reliability of power supply for the country...Together, USAID and MEPCO installed aerial bundled cables (ABC), which insulate live wires and are impossible to steal from with kunda wire hooks."

Cafes could be for grief / discussions of death

By Hicbd

"Death Cafes, part of a broader “death-positive” movement to encourage more open discussion about grief, trauma and loss, are held around the world, in nearly 100 countries. While many haven’t migrated online in the pandemic, others have. The global virus toll and the social isolation it has extracted have opened old, unresolved wounds for some. Others attending virtual Death Cafes are coping with fresh losses from COVID-19, cancer and other illness. Still more bring metaphorical death to the circles: The end of friendships, shattered romances or chronic illness, as Oliver has endured."

Wearable tech could accurately measure breastfeeding milk delivered to babies

By Hicbd

"The only way to check was week to week weigh in and pre- and post-feed weight checks. Waiting for results was extremely stressful for me and it was immediately clear that pre- and post-feeds weights varied wildly with little accuracy...Coro is a revolutionary nipple shield with inbuilt flow measurement that transfers data to an app."

Digital technology / data / plant genomics / biologicals / precision agriculture / autonomous machines could dramatically change agriculture

By Hicbd

"I do think that there's going to be some big opportunities for the next transformation in agriculture in multiplex precision gene editing and in metagenomics in the soil microbiome, even in breakthroughs in biologics or other platforms that can discover the next set or the next range of biologics."

Human breastmilk could be commercially sold

By Hicbd

"As the veritable founding mother of the breast milk industry, she had spent her life charting a controversial path to selling breast milk to hospitals. Medo had been accused of exploiting women to make money and of creating inequalities that hurt babies from poor families. But the products that she’d sold have also been credited with improving the outcomes for tens of thousands of premature babies in hospital neonatal intensive care units."

Low-cost, rapid, point-of-care, diagnostic health tests could save millions of lives

By Hicbd

"When someone with a high fever walks into a rural African clinic, diagnosis could be murky. The symptoms could be those of dengue, Ebola, West Nile disease, malaria or flu, and blood work results from distant labs, if available, often takes days. Now a handful of researchers are separately working on inexpensive, paper-based diagnostic tests that accurately pinpoint the cause of a disease in minutes and could speed up treatment and prevent its spread. The lack of funds and commercial partners however, means most might languish in labs."
