Scientific fraud could be prosecuted

By Hicbd

"Unfortunately, fraud and misconduct in the scientific community isn’t nearly as rare as one might like to believe. We also know that the consequences of being caught are frequently underwhelming. It can take years to get a bad paper retracted, even if the flaws are readily apparent. Sometimes, scientists alleged to have falsified their data file frivolous lawsuits against their peers who point it out, further silencing anyone who would speak out about bad data. And we know that this behavior can have high stakes, and can dramatically affect treatment options for patients."

Business cards could be handed out for playdates

By Hicbd

"Playdates are serious business, now that children are passing out formal business cards to lock in their future hangouts with new pals. That’s what mom influencer Vanity Rodriguez found out after her child came home from school with a playdate business card...It’s part of a growing trend among parents who are advocating for more in-person playdates and creative approaches for exchanging contact information IRL."

U.S. hospice care could not have fraud / mismanagement / abuse

By Hicbd

"But like anything, hospice is subject to fraud, mismanagement and abuse. One government report estimated that hospice’s inappropriate billing costs Medicare hundreds of millions per year...The government has some red lines at its disposal, 'but one of the key issues is, outside of major fraud cases, there are shockingly few consequences for bad behavior,” Oliver summarized. “And the barriers to operating a hospice can be much lower than you think.' A medical background isn’t required, for one, and Medicare only requires that hospices be inspected once every three years."

Strangers could share inner thoughts through a phone / photo

By Hicbd

"Now, though, Bloom talks and listens for the sake of art. His Instagram series A View from a Bridge invites strangers walking over London’s bridges to share their thoughts on life through an old-school red telephone, and pairs each recording with an introspective, carefully chosen piece of music."

Theater could immersive neuroscience

By Hicbd

"Co-created by Academy, Grammy, and Tony Award-winning artist David Byrne and writer Mala Gaonkar, Theater of the Mind is a new theatrical experience you’ll see, feel, taste and hear. Follow your Guide as they revisit key moments in their life in a surreal, 15,000-square-foot installation with a group of just 16 audience members. Over 75 minutes, you’ll move through a series of rooms where you’ll participate in thought-provoking neuroscience experiments. You’ll learn how easily your own senses can deceive you. If perception and memory are both malleable, then perhaps even your identity is less fixed than you think…"

Amusement parks could be designed by contemporary artists

By Hicbd

"Luna Luna was an open-air museum and amusement park in Hamburg, West Germany that ran from June 4 to August 31, 1987. Curated by Austrian artist André Heller, it was an attempt to "create a terrain of modern art, than in centuries-old principal of the fairground." Heller commissioned various artists to design the attractions. The participating artists included Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dalí, David Hockney, Kenny Scharf, Roland Toper, Jean Tinguely, and Sonia Delaunay."

Tinder could be for jobs

By Hicbd

"The Switch App was a downloadable app – like Tinder – that let a jobseeker “swipe” through jobs. A candidate would create an account, upload a full CV or resume, fill in their location details, and then simply start swiping! Employers would upload job profiles, with job descriptions, salaries, and more, and if any of them caught the candidate’s eye, they’d simply swipe right! One swipe would equal one CV being automatically sent to the recruiter."

Cervical cancer could be checked without a pap smear

By Hicbd

"Now, a handful of health care companies are preparing to introduce a new model for cervical cancer screening and prevention that would circumvent the speculum: self-collection, in which a woman swabs her vagina in the doctor’s office, using only a narrow swab that looks similar to the one used during a Covid test. Once the sample is collected, a lab would test it for the strains of human papillomavirus, or HPV, most likely to cause cervical cancer. A key change in HPV screening has made the technique possible: Labs are now able to test using samples taken from the vaginal walls, as opposed to from the cervix itself."

IUDs could be inserted without pain

By Hicbd

"Finally, finally, doctors are starting to take women seriously when we talk about the pain of an IUD insertion. If you’ve had the procedure, you know firsthand. If you haven’t, you’re probably already aware, either from talking to other women who have or from seeing social media videos that have gone viral where women share experiences they describe as 'agonizing.' It is downright barbaric that for decades, women have been expected to bear this pain with little to no pain management."
