Prisons could have sanitary / safe conditions

By Hicbd

"In one Guatemalan minimum security prison, Mateo sleeps together with dozens of other inmates on the plain cement floor of a hallway. Rats, mice, numerous insects ceaselessly crawl around him while other inmates step over him, poking him. Endless and sleepless nights he spends on this floor, without rest, trapped between the smell of urine and sweat."

An underground network of women could perform abortions / provide abortion pills

By Hicbd

"The Jane Collective or Jane, officially known as the Abortion Counseling Service of Women's Liberation, was an underground service in Chicago, Illinois affiliated with the Chicago Women's Liberation Union that operated from 1969 to 1973, a time when abortion was illegal in most of the United States.... A few of their number learned how to perform surgical abortions, with the dilation and curettage method most commonly used. Members of the group performed an estimated 11,000 abortions, mostly to low-income women who could not afford to travel to the places where abortion was legal, as well as women of color."

Rural water systems could be monitored with sensors

By Hicbd

"Keeping clean water flowing is critical to our mission, so we developed a comprehensive remote monitoring tool using cutting-edge IoT (Internet of Things) sensors and cloud computing technology to equip local leaders with real-time data on water system performance....Historically, the only way for governments and NGOs to monitor rural water systems was to visit them. Given this reality, site visits occur only once or twice a year, meaning broken water systems can stay broken for months."

New York City could containerize its trash

By Hicbd

"Why can’t New York City put its trash in bins until it’s picked up? Only 10 percent of the city’s trash is in containers. But changing the way 8.8 million people have become accustomed to doing something would require a cultural shift in the city’s approach to collecting refuse. Sure, we have recycling (and some composting) now, but the logistics of collection haven’t changed much in 60 years; we just keep piling bag after bag on the sidewalk."

Journalists could become venture capitalists

By Hicbd

"Ryan Lawler is the latest journalist to join the venture capitalist ranks. He's leaving TechCrunch to go to 500 Startups. While Lawler said that he doesn't think "TC to VC" is actually a thing, we're not so sure."

Rumble strips could reduce road accidents

By Hicbd

"Rumble strips create noise and vibration inside the vehicle that alert a driver as they cross the center or edge line. Often this alert is strong enough to get the attention of a distracted or drowsy driver, who can quickly make a corrective steering action to return to the roadway safely. Rumble strips also alert drivers to the lane limits when conditions such as rain, fog, snow, or dust reduce driver visibility."

UTIs / bladder infections / liver could be treated with d-mannose

By Hicbd

"D-mannose is often taken as a supplement to help treat and prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). It’s believed to work by blocking the activity of a specific type of bacteria that causes UTIs...D-mannose reduced UTI symptoms in women with an active infection. It was also more effective than the antibiotic for preventing additional infections."

Cafes / homes could use reusable milk kegs / glasses

By Hicbd

"The Udder Way produce high quality reusables that eliminate the need for single-use plastics. 1 x 18 litre reusable keg eliminates the need to manufacture 7000 x 2 litre single-use plastic bottles in its lifetime. Our mission is to eliminate 100 million single-use plastic bottles annually."

A self sustaining, zero waste house could produce food / generate energy

By Hicbd

"Erected in one of the busiest areas of Melbourne, the off-grid, three-storey house and urban farm produced all of its own power and food. Even the cooking gas was generated from human and food waste...Steam from the showers is used to grow mushrooms; the foundation-less building is anchored by self-watering garden beds filled with 35 tonnes of soil. Cameras take viewers inside the Bendigo factory that produces Durra Panel: a biodegradable, fireproof wall and ceiling panel made of straw."

Transparent glamping pods could exist in nature

By Hicbd

"The Living O’Pod is an experimental pod house that promotes a better lifestyle through the integration of nature into the home’s design. Designed for two people to comfortably stay in, the pod is shaped like a transparent bubble that sits amongst the wilderness, with a design so minimal, it puts its surroundings front and center. The two-story pod comes with a steel frame as its main structure, and glass panels all around, almost like a glass igloo."
