Alternative energy: temperature difference

I know that we have physical effects which in them, temperature difference can causes electrical pulses in some materials and vice-versa. (I'm sorry, I forget the name of effects). So it's a raw idea. but I want to ask, if it's possible that for example we bury a rod of such materials in a hot area, such that one of heads on hotter temp, and another side some meters lower in cooler temp, and we produce electricity by this method. Of course it will have low cost, low maintaining cost, and simple execution.

So I taught that a major problem in Internal implants, like Artificial Hearts, is maintaining a power source. Why we don't use our body energy production from mechanical movements caused by breathing process? we can use electroactive polymers to do that. and we can use an inverse working material( I don't know it even exists) to make a artificial heart.
