Alternative energy: temperature difference

I know that we have physical effects which in them, temperature difference can causes electrical pulses in some materials and vice-versa. (I'm sorry, I forget the name of effects). So it's a raw idea. but I want to ask, if it's possible that for example we bury a rod of such materials in a hot area, such that one of heads on hotter temp, and another side some meters lower in cooler temp, and we produce electricity by this method. Of course it will have low cost, low maintaining cost, and simple execution.
