Sleep could be divided into two phases

According to historian A. Roger Ekirch whom studied documents and relics from the ancient, medieval, and modern times, "typically individuals slept in two distinct phases, bridged by an intervening period of wakefulness of approximately one hour". In between these two sleeps, people would pray, read, write, visit neighbors, etc.
