Geothermal could be a significant renewable energy resource

"Geothermal power plants like the Geysers hold enormous promise as a renewable source: They emit 99 percent less carbon dioxide than similar-size fossil-fuel power plants, and the United States holds more than five terawatts of heat resources, enough to power electricity for the entire world. The U.S. Department of Energy is investing in geothermal research and has set a goal to cut the cost of enhanced geothermal systems by 90 percent by 2035."
