How U.S. Department of Labor could be different



Merit-based and/or current / future labor shortages could determine immigration policy

Farmworkers / construction / all workers could be prevented from heatstroke / kidney damage / death

Companies could not discourage and/or prevent labor unions

Unemployment departments could protected against fraud

U.S. workers could not have mandatory overtime and work without air conditioning

Short-term disability coverage could be easier to access

U.S. unemployment insurance could be less difficult to get

Free labor at rehab centers could be investigated / monitored

OSHA could be more effective and worker's compensation/insurance offerings could be better for employees

The meatpacking industry could have better labor rights / conditions

Internships could help the long-term unemployed get back to work

Pregnant women's workplace rights could be protected

Labor unions could be organized and regulated differently to prevent corruption

Workplaces could make it easier for women to breastfeed babies

The workforce system could be revamped by accurate labor market data, better website information/applications/online courses, and employer/education coordination

The Job Corps program could be improved or redesigned

Firms could be mandated to provide the first two years of short-term disability insurance
